With winter creeping in, we need a bit of feel-good music to numb the pain of dark early mornings, woolly tights and inevitable Lemsip. Enter Grouplove, the LA-based collective known for their brand of summery indie-pop. We like to think of them as the musical equivalent of an S.A.D. lamp.
You’ll probably recognise the band’s ‘Never Trust A Happy Song’ from the iPod touch advert, a track that’s typical of their tongue-in-cheek, dance-inducing music. In the run up to a string of London-based gigs in November, we caught up with girl in the group – Hannah Hooper – about everything Grouplove:
HI HANNAH! HOW WAS GROUPLOVE BORN?
It’s a crazy story- but the short version is we all met at an artist residency in Greece during the summer of 2008. We formed the band a year later when we all reunited in LA and recorded a handful of songs together. Our group has a lot of love for each other so Grouplove seemed like a natural name for us!
DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN A SENTENCE
We make loud passionate music that’s both light and heavy.
FAVOURITE GROUPLOVE LYRICS?
I did a drawing on our last tour of an overworked, exhausted-looking guy about to smoke a joint saying ‘I’d rather be a hippy than a hipster’. This became part of the lyrics on our track ‘Hippy Hill’, which is all about turning your phone off, not looking at instagram for a second and just taking in your surroundings.
ANY TOUR ANTICS?
Touring with Grouplove is like wearing your favourite outfit every day for a few months. You love it, you don’t want to wear anything else, but eventually it gets nasty and needs to be washed. On our occasional days off between shows nobody ever gets out of bed until dinner when we normally get a huge Indian feast together.
BEST GIG YOU’VE EVER PLAYED?
Each gig only gets better, except for the random shows where an amp blows or someone loses their voice…sounds like a cop out but we are only getting crazier.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE BANDS STYLE?
I think of us as hippy gangsters… hangsters?! I’m always changing my look. There is a freedom in putting together an outfit that I get off on.
YOU GUYS HAVE AWESOME HAIR… ANY TIPS?
Thank you! We are pretty low maintenance so my tips would be forget your hairbrush, don’t shampoo a lot and sleep on it!
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF LONDON?
We love playing in London. It’s a little expensive to imagine actually living and making art there but it’s a fantastic place to find inspiration and play shows and make friends. Our bass player Sean is from Shepherds Bush so he helps us feel right at home when we roll through.
BEST LONDON HAUNT?
Somehow we spend almost every night in London at The Lexington in Angel. It started as a meeting point for us and just became our spot.
DO YOU ALL HAVE CERTAIN ROLES IN THE GROUP?
We’re like the Spice Girls. I’m Ginger spice, Christian is Posh spice, Andrew is Baby spice, Sean is Scary Spice, Ryan is Sporty spice.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR GROUPLOVE?
We are on a world tour fro new album, Spreading Rumours. We are out here getting crazy on stage and crazy off stage. I hope to see y’all there!
