Proving that two (beautifully blow-dried) heads are better than one, twin sister act Say Lou Lou just made the top of our playlist. After growing up between Sydney and Stockholm, the girls draw on their mixed influences to create dreamy electro-pop that’s both haunting and hopeful. Throw in some incredible 70s-inspired style and cheekbones to-die-for, and you can see why Say Lou Lou has got us crushing hard. We caught up with them ahead of their new track release, ‘Better In The Dark’, out on 16th December:
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
It’s dreamwave, ethereal pop music.
HOW HAS YOUR UPBRINGING INFLUENCED YOUR WORK?
Both our parents, and all our uncles are musicians, and we’ve grown up in a rather creative environment, where music was a big part of our family traditions. Musically, the Australian side of us is very organic and ethereal whilst the Swedish side of us is more slick.
HOW’S BEING A TWIN? ANY TELEPATHY?!
Sometimes we feel like we’re telepathic, but in reality, two people who have spent almost every day with each other for 22 years become so in-sync it’s almost creepy. It’s a blessing and a curse, but mostly a blessing in the creative process as ideas develop quickly and we can be really honest with each other.
HAS YOUR FASHION SENSE ALWAYS BEEN SIMILAR?
No, definitely not. We went to different schools for many years, and had different circles of friends and interests during our teenage years. We’ve always been attracted to similar art and music, but for a long period I (Elektra) was super girly whilst Miranda was more grungy.
ANY STYLE ICONS?
Charlotte Rampling and David Bowie.
We like vintage shopping mostly. The best fashion designers vary from season to season, decade to decade, so that’s harder to say.
MOST TREASURED FASHION ITEM?
Our mother’s old 70’s and 80’s pieces, especially a pair of gold flared trousers.
EVER HAD A BIG FASHION FAIL?
So many… But if you never try you never know!
GIRLS TO WATCH THIS YEAR?
Warpaint, Haim, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Saoirse Ronan, Lina Scheynius and Alice Munro (an old lady but equally interesting!).
WHAT’S YOUR SONG OF ‘NOW’?
‘Spanish Sahara’ by Foals. We just toured with them and the song was breathtaking live. We can’t get it out of our heads!
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
Being able to be a musicians as a daytime job, working and interacting with so many incredible people.
