The clothes on the catwalk may be far from our price range, but here at The Girl we know it’s important to keep an eye on the big fashion weeks. Although it’s hard to imagine right now, there will be a summer next year, and we will be wearing flippy skirts and short shorts. Still, that’s ages away, and we want new clothes now. Here are a few trends from fashion month SS14 that you can get on board with now and wear through winter, and the songs that will get you in the mood for them.

1. DARE TO BARE – Antonio Maras SS14

Love them or hate them, crop tops and bare midriffs are here to stay a while longer. On a night out a crop top is always ok, whether it’s June or January, just man up. In the day, just layer something under it for a bit of extra warmth. Austrian label Meshit do some great cut-out dresses.

Soundtrack: Anything by No Doubt. Because Gwen Stefani has abs that were made for a crop.

2. SHEER GENIUS – Dolce & Gabbana SS14

I’m pretty sure every catwalk this season had at least one sheer, nip-exposing look. And while this may seem a bit extroverted, add a bra and sheer is very wearable.  Dolce & Gabbana made demure dress shapes sexy in see through lace. Missguided, have a whole section devoted to lace dresses. Chiffon and the like are also key, and great for layering without adding bulk. If you don’t already own an American Apparel sheer shirt, you really should.

Soundtrack: It has to be Cher. She hasn’t worn anything opaque since about 1983.

Erdem SS14

Florals are pretty much always on trend, and right now they’re getting bigger, better and a little weirder. Applique dresses look great under big jumpers, especially accessorised with floral headgear. Topshop’s more expensive lines are worth the investment when it comes to this trend, as cheap looks cheap where florals are concerned.

Soundtrack: If anyone knows how to rock florals it’s YADi in her new music video for Creatures. Great song too.

4. LOVE LEATHER – J W Anderson SS14

Leather was everywhere on the catwalks, and in fairness this is a trend that works far better in the colder months. Summer leather is sweaty. Winter leather is warm. ASOS has an extensive range of leather, pleather and PVC that poses a daily danger to every bank account at The Girl towers.

Soundtrack: Sia. Her new song is on the soundtrack to the new Hunger Games film. And Katniss Everdeen is super cool and wears leather at all times.

5. STRUCTURAL SHAPES – Mary Katrantzou SS14

Silhouettes have been getting more interesting for a while now, and everything from American football-style shoulders to extreme lampshade-style skirts has made an appearance on the SS14 catwalks. This trend can be a bit extreme, but treated with caution it’s a really simple way to make an outfit a bit more interesting. COS do some great structured dresses, and Zara has the best ruffles on the best skirts around.

Soundtrack: Gaga’s your girl for this one.
